"Failiae!" A girl started and sat upright in the tall grasses, her long brown hair flinging out behind her. "Yes? What is it Mome?" she asked, placing her hands before her on the slightly damp ground. "I'm not due for chores for..." she then bent over her watch, which was held up by a silvery chain around her neck, "five minutes!" Her mother shook her head. "I want you to come in now. Your brother is giving me troule and you seem to be the only one who can persuade him in his current condition." Failiae shook her head and stood up, brushing the damp soil from her knees. As she walked in through the doorway, a blur rushed at her and captured her knees in his embrace. She sighed. "Komeh, what's the matter?" The little boy looked up at her, his eyes full of his watery tears. "Sis! They want me to... to..." The girl shook her head, then placed her hadns under his arms and lifted him up with much trouble. "You're growing up fast, little man. Now, what are our loving parents trying to make you do?" He sniffed, then wiped his eyes, his expression now that of a kid trying to look determined, but only succeeded in looking slightly consipated. She shook her head once more, shooing the thought from her mind and hiding the smile behind her own wooried look. "They want me to go to Aechm for schooling for the Army! I don't want to join the West Country! I don't want to join the West Army! I want to stay here! You can't make me betray Daqui! This is my city, too!" Failiae was unable to hide the look of shock that was currently residing on her face. She put him down, gave him a pat on the head, then shooed the 8-year-old from the room. Once she was sure he was out of earshot, she turned to face her parents, hands on her hips. "Why are you having him leave Daqui? For the benefit of Opediz, no less!" she asked, finding the entire matter to be a total outrage. Her mother met her with a stern look. "It is for his own good! Soon, the West Army will come and begin their battles here in Daqui. The battles have been going on for too long in Derfic and Dayfl. When they come here, they will most likely overthrow us, Just like they did with Du--Zfuio." As Failiae opened her mouth to protest, her father pua a finger to his own mouth. "Failiae. We know how horrible this must sound to you, but for Ko--" Failiae turned and marched over to one of the doors. Just as her father was about to shout out at her, she put a finger to her lips and took the handle in her hand. She pulled the door over to the wall, where a cabinet stood, and crept into the gap between the cabinet where her parents couldn't view her. Then she oppened the bottom-most dresser drawer and found a hole in the bottom, from which a short pipe was extruding. "Just for security," she whispered softly into it, then placed a cap tightly atop it. She closed the drawer and stood upright once more. As she crept out of the gap, she found her parents watching her intently with curious faces. She closed the door and shrugged. "Please, continue." Her father shook his head and regained his composure. "For Komeh's saftey," he said firmly, getting a reassuring nod form his wife. "When the Army comes, do you truly think that he will be safe here? If he goes to Aechm he will be safe from their tearing grasp; and, perhaps, his family will be as well." He raised his eyebrows in spite of himself. Failiae glared at her parents, then sighed resignedly. She walked outside, then ran until she came to the end of the small meadow that was her home; the beginning of the forest that she called her sanctuary.

"Guys, c'mon! What did I ever do to you?!" the 14 year-old male demanded as a girl sat on top of him, pinning down his arms. "Hold still, Alex!" she shouted as a boy of 18 years strolled in the room. "We thought that it was time for your hair to recieve a change," he said coolly. "Hurry up, Aubrey!" the girl barked as Alex's struggling died down. The boy who responded to Aubrey shrugged and disappeared in the next room momentarily before returning with three wood bowls and a stained towel. "But I like the color of my hair!" Alex protested. His hair currently possesed the color of blue, which was soon to be changed thanks to his loving brothers and the girl they had come to call their sister. Chishio, call for Andy," Aubrey said, stirring a pink mixture. The girll nodded, her own green hair with multi-colored highlights whipping ALex in the face as she called for her older brother, "ANDY! GET OVER HERE!" A boy with maroon hair dashed in and stared at the scene for a minute before he burst out laughing. "Okay, okay, what can I do?: Andy asked, fixing his rectangle glasses on top of his head. "Grab his legs," Chishio said after Alex had kneed him in the back. Andy did so as a fourth and eldest boy walked in. "Ayk, help me stick the purple in his hair," Aubrey said, picking up another bowl filled with water and dumping it over Alex's head. Ayk looked down at his brother with a growing smile playing across his face. "of course," he said, sitting down by Aubrey and Alex's head. He picked up the third bowl filled with a purple liquid and stirred it while Aubrey worked the pink liquid that was just short of a paste into the youngest brother's hair. Alex had given up on trying to break free now, for he had the whole family on him. Andy sat on Alex's legs pondering while Chishio antagonized him. Aubrey finished pinking the short spiky hair allowing Ayk to put strands of purple in it. "There! Done!" Aubrey said triumphantly, stepping back while everyone else followed. Alex stood up, muttering a mix of threats and cussing before stalking off to his room. "Well, I think that went rather well," Aubrey said with a smile. "Chishio, go drag Alex out here. We're goin' out tonight," Ayk said as Aubrey walked into the kitchen and rinsed out the bowls. "Really? Where?" the girl asked enthusiastically. "Where ever the streets feel like taking us."

Failiae had to smile. No matter how desperately depressed she was about her parents' decision, she loved her sanctuary even more. She hummed softly to herself as she imagined it. The dark woods were the perfect cover for a hide-away, where she had built a tunnel to reside underneath the old, rotting shadck of wood. The tunnel was large enough for her to bear-crawl through, until she got to the hollow hole she loved so dearly. There, she had a small "bookshelf" that held about ten of her favorite bookds and a bale of fresh hay that could be used as a chair, or even a bed. She supposed that she would porbably see Komeh coming out just as she arrived; he must have been listening in. Her sanctuary served for another purpose. From the house to the Hide-away, she had pipes, each in a room of the house to the one room of the hide-away. She had installed them the summer she had made the hole, when her parents had been in town, awaiting the birth of her brother. Each pipe had two caps, one for either end of them so that she could cut off the noises she heard from the house, or she could stop her brother, who had found out her secret, from listening in. She came to the big oak tree and walked the half circle around it, coming up on the shelter, then stopped there in shock. The shelter had collapsed, the walls caving in on themselves. The roof was in shambles and there were several bricks randomly lying about. She had to laugh at herself. She had, of course, known that she'd find it this way, since it had been this way since the day she first saw it; though the grass was higher and the amount of fungus had multiplied several times more. She merely enjoyed that art of drama. Shee shook her head, scolding herself for acting so foolishly, a wil smile playing across her face. She moved a crumbling wall and slipped down a hole in the damp earth. She crawled along the "hallway"
okay, my mom is freaking kicking me off to go take a shower which i'm planning to take LATER TONIGHT.
Geez, mom, I love you too.
And she's also watching that whack movie that she picked out.

and stepped into her glorious room-underground. She strolled casually over to the line of pipes, each with a name tag above them: Kitchen, Family Room, Dining Room, Father's Studay, Parents' Bedroom, Komeh's Room, and Failie's Rom. Some of them, such as her father's study and her parents' and Komeh's rooms, were capped tightly and hardly opened; she believed in personal privacy. She swiftly lifted the Kitch's lid and pu her ear to it. She listened for a moment, the covered it, not finding it to her liking. She lifted Living Room's and did the same, then repeared the process until all that remained were her father's study and her parents' bedroom. She grimaced, then lifted the bedroom's cap to hear a conversation floating down to her. "It doesn't feel right..." her father's exhasted voice said. "I know .... But there's not much we can truly do for either of them. I feel so helpless!" her mother replied. "Let us just hope for the best then. We'll pray to Atu." "alright," her mother said with a sigh. There was a rustle of cloth and an abrupt stop. "Please, don't," her mother said. Failiae could practically see her father's shudder, as she knew he would do at a time like this. "But hon, now really--No, now don't you shake your head to me like that. Listen hon, no, listen. I just want--" "I don't want to hear it. I'm going to go find Komeh." "No, please. Just wait. We haven't talked about Failiae's problem yet. Please!" Her father's voice called out, becoming more and more desperate. "Enough is enough, Loslan. Now I'm off to find my son." There was the sound of the door creaking shut, then her father yelled out, "I will not have you leave our daughter out of the picture, Hisa! Come back here!" "Good bye!" Her mother yelled out, the door banging behind her. Failiae sat down shocked, and this time, it wasn't for her love of drama.

Chishio knocked on the door to Alex's room. "C'mon out. We're going somewhere," she said in a louder voice to penetrate the door. "Where?" came a muffled voice from behind the wood. "I dunno. Just change and let's go," she replied. In the large cities, you were eaten alive if you did not dress according to the demands of time. Most people wore quite a bit of black to blend in with the city's most active time--midnight. Chishio had changed from her red loose-fitting attire and into a crimson T-Shirt ending slightly above her midriff with an oval slit on the chest. She chose a long black, baggy skirt with a flowing red cape tied around her waist to compliment her top with several black leather belts and a think piece of white cloth loosely hung around her hip and drawstrings to keep it up. The long skirt concealed her bare feet, one would notice, as she rummaged through her stuff and found a long black glove that she pulled over her left arm. Her right was wrapped in a long strip of white cloth that was used as her only defense when fighting. Fathering half of her hair that dropped down several inches above her knees, she died it with a piece of twine and repeated for the other side. Chishio grabbed her scythe that was leaning up against the brick wall in case she had an opportunity to show off and was out of the room that she shared with Aubrey and Alex in an instant. "Ready!" she called down the hall to Ayk who was now dresed in a black trench coat. :Good. We're only waiting on--here he is," the twenty-two year-old replied as Aubrey walked in with a black leather overcoat and white trimming. The five set out together, lurking the familiar streets. "Did you honestly hafta bring that, Chishio?" Alex asked, indicating her scythe. "It's not very attractive for a girl." Chishio stuck out her tongue. "Since when did you take such an interest in my love life?" "Leave her alone. You know damn well she can take out anything with that thing and I'm content knowing that," Andy said with a nod. Chishio stuck her tongue out again as they turned down an alley. "Let's see what's in the news today," Ayk mumbled, opening a metallic steel door for the rest to enter. Chishio headed for the bar along with Aubrey and Andy while Alex and Ayk headed for a bulletin board where all the news was posted daily for those who didn't reviece annual updates. There were two classes in the city of Umagason--lower and upper. Chishio and her brothers were considered to be in the lower class for they had little money and enjoyed the nightlife. The upper class were different in that they worked almost all the time, not being able to enjoy such things. The main difference was that they had quite a bit more money than most. Both had one thing in common, however, they loved to fight. It was the Umagason way. "I vote we go with Plan A," Aubrey said in a hushed voice as he sat down with CHishio and Andy on either side of him. "Plan A" consisted of Chishio seducing a man to the point where he tries to advance on her when Andy and Aubrey came in to "protect" her. Basically, Chishio got little to no action.' "No! I vote we come up with a new plan.... One that involves me fighting," Chishio replied, having a difficulrt time keeping her voice down. "We hafta somehow get at least three guys aroused--" Andy began, but was interrupted by the approaching Ayk. "More new about goin' to war again...." he said grimly. "Tell us something we don't know," Andy replied sarcastically. "Why don't you tell me what you're up to," Ayk told his younger brother. "We're plannin' to bring the whole bar to Hell with us," he said coolly. This was basically slang for "we're going to get the whole bar in a fight." "Sweet," Ayk said, taking a seat next to Chishio with Alex on the other side of him. "We wanna come."

Failiae reviewed her thoughts. Her father had been the first person to make a move, but her mother was the idiot who started the fight. Didn't her mother care about her problems, whatever they happened to be? Or was she just being stubborn? But this was a serious matter! She shook her head, and stood up, then rethought and sat herself down. She lifted the cap to Kichen to hear her mother talking with her younger brother. "But Mome! Why do I have to go with the Army? I don't want to leave this beautiful Dawui!" Komeh yelled, sobs choking his whiney voice. "The Army may be here soon! We live close to the border. This may be your last chance! Think of it this way: You'll see more of the world! Most of the West COuntry and maybe some of the East!" Her mother always had stunk at persuasion. "I'll only go if Failiae agrees and tells me to!" "Stop this nonsense! Who do you think has the power in this situation? Your fifteen year old sister or your loving mother?" Failiae capped the pipe. She did not like the way this day was going. Dusting herself off, she proceeded to make her way back to the house. As she walked slowly along the grasses, she felt her stomach drop. Wondering why she looked down to find her bare foot stuck in a hole. "Oh, truly wonderful!" she yelled out, as she yanked her now-sore foot from the nuisance in the ground. She turned around and flopped herself down on the ground, sighing. One question kept goig through her head: Why me? She glanced around at the clouds and noticed a rather dark, thin cloud, then squinted. "Clouds don't look like that... that's smoke...!" She jolted to her feet, upsetting her sore one. She shouted, half as a warning, half just in pain, then stopped. Right before her eyes a battle was unfolding. She squatted down and put a hand to her brow. If she squinted real hard, she might be able to see her house from here.... She gasped, now cursing herself for just watching as her house came under siege. Three figures stepped out; Tall medium and short. She sat there as the figures seemed to argue and fight with the soldiers. A single gounshot erupted through the vicious battle field and the middle figure dropped. Failiae knew exactly what had happened. For some time she sat there, the battle continuing to rage on, but she was in unawares of it all; her consciousness seemed to dwindle and flicker, playing games with her. She lost track of time. The sun was a small, dull orb in a sky of smoke and dusty ash and flames. When she finally came to, she realized that the soldiers were long gone and many people from the area had begun to back their things and leave, or else trying to find a way to rebuild. But to her, all hope was lost. She walked back home, though she would never really know what time it was. She got to the house to find it fully inhabited with Army Officials. She was looking through one of the well-lit windows at the men when something gripped her shoulder. She spun around to face her father. "Pape!" she cried, bursting into tears. He hugged her tight, then said, "Your mother--" "I know," she said, sobbing. "I saw. Over there in the field." She pointed to her distant hiding place. Her father's visage paled. he took a deep breath, then said, "Komeh and I have been so worried about you. He told me, 'She'll probably be fine' but I still couldn't help it." Failiae shook her head. SOmething had just clicked. "Pape, why did you let them? Right after you had fought with her, none-the-less" The chocked look on her father's face turned her cold. "Where's Komeh?" she asked. Her father shook his ehad. "All in good time." "No," she demanded, "Where's my brother?" Her father pointed to the side of the house, too shocked for words. Failiae stomped to the side of the house. A new round of thoughts were ticking away in he head. Her father was the one who had first yelled. He should havae tried harder to protect their mother! He could have been calmer, right? She uneasily avoided the voice in her head that kept reminding her that she had been blaming her mother earlier. "Failiae!!" Komeh shouted as he came into view. He hugged his sister; but Failiae knew what she had to do. "Komeh, you must got to Aechm," she said. "But--" "No. You must go. Write to father often," she said, leaving off the usual nick-name. "What? Sister! Pape was so worried--" "I know, and I'm sorry, but I must go now...." She broke away from her brother's arms and started to march along the scorched path.
